Meanwhile, in Hallett Cove, attempts to be
involved in mission led to a connection with
the LCMU (Lutheran Church Mission Uganda)
and we offered to plant a church in Uganda
by buying land, supporting evangelists and
building a place of worship.
In 2005, a plot of land became available at
Mutai.
Since then we have supported the new and
very active Mutai congregation by:
-
purchasing the 2 acres of land as
advised;
-
employing 2 evangelists ($60 each per
week);
-
providing seed and farming equipment;
-
providing bibles and bible study
materials;
-
buying bicycles for the evangelists and
lay leader;
-
providing stationery, educational
materials and school meals to the
nursery school;
-
buying sewing machines for the volunteer
school teachers so that they can earn a
living by tailoring;
-
sending clothes for children and women,
reference books for the school and
sewing materials for those learning to
make a living by sewing
Since then Mutai has grown in every way,
though poverty and unemployment are endemic
there. HIV/AIDS and war have decimated the
male population and left many elderly women
caring for orphaned children. But they:
-
grow crops on the congregation land and
run a piggery to feed the needy;
-
run a nursery school (now 56 students)
with 2 volunteer teachers;
-
run a feeding programme for these
children (improving their health
greatly);
-
have weekly bible study, worship and
Sunday School (50 children under 12);
-
have over 150 members
-
are planting new congregations all
around them;
We are now planning to help them build a
proper structure on their land for school,
worship, training and community use.
As other Australian Lutheran
churches have become involved in Uganda we
keep in touch with what they are doing and
have remained in contact with the friends
throughout Uganda that we made since first
investigating this work.
